Creators Country Club

Welcome to The Fairway Report. I'm Trey Scott, founder of the Creators Country Club. Every week I share the strategies, tools, and systems that help small creators build real businesses on YouTube.

I want to talk about the single biggest mistake I see new creators make when they start with affiliate marketing. It’s not their content, their personality, or their work ethic. It’s their math.

Most creators start by promoting the products they know, which are often low-cost, consumer-grade items. Think Amazon affiliate links for a $20 book or a $50 microphone. You make a sale, and you get a commission check for $1.80. It’s exciting for about five seconds, and then the crushing reality sets in: you would need to sell thousands of those just to make a dent in your rent.

This is the content treadmill that leads to burnout. You’re creating and creating, but the financial reward is so small that it feels like you’re spinning your wheels. The problem isn’t your effort; it’s your model. You’re fishing in a pond full of minnows when there’s an ocean of whales just a few miles away.

This is where the 30% Rule comes in. It’s a simple filter I use to decide if an affiliate product is worth my time, and it has completely changed the economics of my business.

The 30% Rule: Your New North Star

The rule is simple: I will not promote a product unless the commission I earn is at least 30% of the price of the product, OR the commission is a recurring payment.

Why 30%? Because it forces you to stop thinking about small-ticket items and start focusing on high-value, high-ticket offers. A 30% commission on a $1,000 course is $300. A 30% commission on a $100/month software subscription is $30/month, every month, for as long as that customer stays subscribed.

Suddenly, the math starts to make sense. Instead of needing thousands of sales, you only need a handful to make a real impact on your income. One sale of a $1,000 course is the equivalent of selling 167 copies of that $20 book. Which sounds like a better use of your time?

How to Find 30%+ Commission Products

“That’s great, Trey,” you’re probably thinking, “but where do I find these magical high-ticket products?”

They are hiding in plain sight. Here are the three places I look first:

1.

Software & SaaS Companies: The best recurring commissions come from software companies. Think about the tools you already use to run your channel: your video editing software, your email newsletter provider, your thumbnail design tool. Most of these have affiliate programs with recurring commissions of 20-40%. These are the easiest products to promote because you already use and love them.

2.

Digital Products & Courses: This is where you find the big one-time commissions. Think about the online courses, e-books, or templates you’ve purchased to level up your skills. These products often have affiliate programs with commissions of 30-50% or even higher. The creators of these products are happy to pay a premium for new customers because their marginal cost is zero.

3.

Direct Partnership: Some of the best affiliate deals aren’t publicly listed. If you love a product that doesn’t have a public affiliate program, reach out to them directly. Send a professional email explaining who you are, who your audience is, and why you think their product is a perfect fit. You’d be surprised how many companies are willing to create a custom affiliate code for you if you have a targeted audience and a professional approach.

The Takeaway

Stop thinking about affiliate marketing as a game of volume. It’s a game of value. The more value the product provides, the higher the price, and the bigger your commission. By focusing on products that meet the 30% Rule, you align your effort with real financial results.

This is how you get off the content treadmill and start building a real business. It’s not about working harder; it’s about making your work count.
